my God, i am lost. are you looking for me? are you here?


try checking the place you saw me last.

between the pages of a musty tome,

nose pressed to the ink, eyelids heavy. under black water, hidden in the darkness of night.

enrobed in a tallis, head bowed in prayer for hours,

trembling before you.

parshat toldot, november 13, 1939 When troubles are as great as they are at present and, as we see plainly, Jewish men have had their beards shorn off, they become unrecognizable as Jews from the outside. Then, as the terrible persecutions and unbearable tortures beyond description persist, we watch people becoming unrecognizable even from the inside. In these terrible circumstances, a person may lose himself completely and be unable to recognize himself at all. He can no longer recall how he felt on the Sabbath even one year ago, or how he felt during the week, before praying or after praying, etc. He has been stepped upon and crushed until he no longer feels that he is a Jew or knows whether he is a human being at all, or an animal without any faculties with which to feel. This is the level of being truly lost and absent, described in the verse "And they will come, those who are lost ..."


The Talmud (Kiddushin 2b) says: "The one who has lost must return in search of his lost article." This is because a truly lost object cannot be seen or recognized, and so its owner must go around looking for it in order to find it, raise it, and bring it back to him. God is our owner, and we are his lost articles...The owner of the lost object will return to search for us and find us, give us everything good, and return us to God and redeem us with the salvation of our bodies and our souls, with great mercy and good deliverance.

כי כשהצרות מתרבות עתה כ"כ וגם פשוט מספרים זקני ישראל שע"ז חיצוניתם אינם ניכרים ומרוב הרדיפות והיסורים קשים מנשוא שאי אפשר לשער גם בפנימיותם אינם ניכרים עד שגם האיש בעצמו אובד ואת עצמו אינו מכיר איך הרגיש עצמו לפני שנה בשבת גם על קדושת בחול קודם התפילה ובשעת התפילה וכדומה ,ועתה נדרס ונרמס עד שאינו מרגיש אם איש ישראל הוא אם אדם הוא או בהמה שאין לה שום מציאות להרגיש והוא בחי' אובד ובאו האבדים


אבל גמרא אומרת (קידושין דף ב') בעל אבדה מחזר אחר אבדתה כי כשנאבדה האבדה לא נראה ולא ניכרת מחזר בעל האבדה אחריה למצאה להגביהה ולהביאה אליו והלא הקב"ה הוא בעל האביה שלנו... בעל האבדה יחזור עלינו למצוא אותנו וליחן לנו כל טוב ולהשיבנו אליו ית' ולגאלנו גאולה ופדות גופנו ונפשנו ברחמים רבים וישועות טובות.
