parshat ki tavo

when the world is too dark,

when it pressed downs upon your back,

on your body,

the weight crushing,

squeezing,

breaking you,

beyond a point

you thought possible.


when each individual pain is too much to feel,

that you stop feeling,

forced to become numb.


I'll feel them for you.

I'll see them for you.

I'll hold each one,

for you.


Parshat Ki Tavo, September 13, 1941

"The Egyptians were cruel to us, making us suffer and imposing harsh slavery on us. We cried to God, God of our ancestors, and He heard our voice, saw our suffering, our harsh labor, and our distress." (Deut. 26:6-7)

We need to understand why our sages in the Midrash (Tanaim. Ibid, quoted in the Passover Haggadah) interpret each of the latter phrases-"our suffering,” "our harsh labor," and "our distress” while ignoring the first part of the text -- that which says, "The Egyptians were cruel to us, making us suffer and imposing harsh slavery on us. " The second part is interpreted as follows: "Suffering refers to the separation of men and women, "harsh labor" refers to the killing of our children, and "distress" refers to our stress. Why did our sages explain only the latter part of the text in which "God heard our voice" and not the first part of the text where it

says, "The Egyptians were cruel to us”?


Now, in our present circumstances, we can see that by comparison with the way we used to feel we have become numb to all pain and suffering. In the past, we suffered every hurt, no matter how minor. But if we were capable of responding to all the pain of our current suffering with emotion and distress, as we once did, it would be impossible to survive, God forbid, even for a single day. The reason is simple, as our sages said in the Talmud (Shabbat 13b): "Dead flesh of a living person does not feel the scalpel." We can feel only a bone-crushing sensation throughout our body. The universe is blacked out for us. Day and night have ceased to exist. There is nothing but disorientation and confusion. It seems as if the whole world is pressing down on us, squeezing, squashing, and stressing us, God forbid, to bursting point. We cannot feel the details of each torment or gauge the degree of its pain. The sages did not interpret the first part of the text, “The Egyptians were cruel to us,” because Jews did not experience every harsh decree individually. Still God, blessed be He, “heard our voice,” and saw the smallest detail of every torment, as our sages explained. Then God had mercy, and saved us.


וירעו אתנו המצרים ויענונו ויתנו עלינו עבדה קשה. ונצעק אל ד' אלקי אבתינו וישמע ד' את קולינו וירא את ענינו ואת עמלנו ואת לחצנו. (דברים כו, ו-ז)


וצריך להבין הא דרשו חכמינו ז"ל (בהגדה של פסח) "ענינו, עמלנו, ולחצנו" שכל אחת לצרות אחרות מרמזת, "ענינו" זו פרישות דרך ארץ, "עמלנו" אלו הבנים, "לחצנו" זה הדחק, א"כ למה לא נאמרו כל אלו ב"וירעו אותנו המצרים", רק ב"וישמע ד' את קולנו".


אבל כעת רואים אנו שאין אנחנו מרגישים כל צער וצרה בערך שהיינו מרגישים לשעבר כל צרה גם קטנה שבאה עלינו, ואילו היינו מרגישים עתה את כל צערה של כל צרה בהרגשה ומרירות כזו שהרגשנו אז, כי אז לא היה אפשרות להתקיים חס וחלילה אפילו יום אחד.


הסבה הפשוטה היא כמו שאמרו חכמינו ז"ל (שבת יג:) "אין בשר המת שבחי מרגיש באיזמל", רק רמיסה בכל עצמותנו מרגישים אנו, העולם חשוך בעדנו, לא יום ולא לילה רק מהומה ומבוכה, דומה כאילו כל העולם שוכב עלינו ומעיק ולוחץ אותנו עד חס וחלילה להרצץ, ולא בפרטיות כל צרה לפי ערכה הקשה. לכן ב"וירעו אותנו המצרים" לא נאמר בפרטיות במה הרעו, כיון שלא הרגישו ישראל את כל גזרה רעה לעצמה, אבל הוא יתברך שמע את קולנו וראה את פרט של כל צרה כמו שדרשו חכמינו ז"ל ענינו וכו' וריחם והושיענו.
