the project

a year of fire

this year, i'm turning to the torah of rabbi kalonymus kalman shapiro and mining it for insights on what it means to be a person of faith in the darkest of times.  rabbi shapiro's torah comes to us from the warsaw ghetto; his work the eish kodesh includes a dvar torah on almost every parsha spanning the three year period of 1939-1942.  in his writings, we see rabbi shapiro wrestle with the place of hope in darkness and doubt in faith, as he navigates his own relationship with God and seeks to renew the spirits of his community.

to learn more about the eish kodesh, i highly recommend dr. nehemia polen's book the holy fire.  j. hershy worch's sacred fire provides an english translation of the eish kodesh.  unfortunately, as of now, the eish kodesh isn't available in an easily accessible online format.

who am i?  i am by no mean a scholar of the eish kodesh.  i'm someone looking to learn more, go deeper, and poetry is the medium through which i hope to internalize some of rabbi shapiro's teachings.

to get to know me more, you can find my bio under rabbi avi strausberg at hadar.org.
