behar

A world contained in the details.

God cares not only,

About the big picture,

The broad strokes,

Did you check off the box of commitment and obligation?

God also demands the details.

Not the what, but the how.

With what energy and focus did you daven?

How did you lay tefillin this morning?

In what manner did you spend Shabbat?

Look around.

There’s a world contained in the details.

The blueness of an egg, warmed in a nest.

The quirky, confident facial expressions of a child dancing.

The hand-written welcome note, each letter a different color.

There’s a world contained in the details.

So too with Torah.

It’s all in the details.

Parshat B’Har, May 18, 1940

It is true that there are people who say to themselves, “How have I sinned, and why should I submit to any more? Do I not put on tefillin, God forbid? Or do I not observe the Sabbath, God forbid?” However, we need to remind ourselves that it also depends upon how we put on tefillin, how we pray, how we spend the Sabbath, and how we occupy ourselves with Torah. We must remember that it was also about the fine details of the commandments that God held the mountain like a barrel over the Jewish people, saying, “If you accept the Torah, ‘tis well; if not, there shall be your burial.” (Bavli Shabbat 88a)

This is why the Torah hints that all the details and minutiae of the Torah are from Sinai, and it was about these details that Mount Sinai was held over the people like a barrel. If they would observe and fulfill all the details of the commandments, then, the Torah promises, “For six years you will plant your fields, prune your vineyards, and harvest your crops.” The Torah promises field and vineyard, work, sufficient bread, and all good things, because reward is assured in this world for observance of the details.
